Description
Aztec God of rain, fertility and lighting. He is one of those deities who is morally dubious, he causes floods and droughts but also does good such as helping grow bountiful crops and giving rain. He is depicted wearing a mask with large round eyes and long fangs. Tlaloc is very similar to the Mayan rain God Chaac who was worshipped by the Maya at the same time. Good ol’ Aztecs, can’t come up with an original deity.
Tlaloc has some history with Tezcatlipoca (what deity hasn’t hes an asshole) as good ol’ Tezca kidnapped his first wife, Xochiquetza. After that, he married Chalchihuitlicue and they were pretty much a power couple. He is the ruler of Tlalocan, the fourth heaven. Tlalocan is the place of eternal spring and the destination in the afterlife for those who died violently from water related illnesses, those who got struck by lighting, those who drowned and those who died of dropsy, leprosy, and rheumatism. He is served by various rain spirits called the tlaloque that dwelled in the mountains.
Five months of the 18-month ritual year were dedicated to Tlaloc and the tlaloque. He was one of the deities that called for child sacrifice. On the 13th month there would be a ritual dedicated to the tlaloque. They would create small idols made of amaranth paste, “kill” them and eat them. He was a very revered deity for the Aztecs.
